Sometimes in the early years the feoffees received contributions from the parishioners towards clerical stipends. 189 These offerings may not have been given entirely of the freewill of the townspeople, for on one occasion Mr Mountford is recorded to have paid 6d. 190 It is therefore likely that these contributions were in fact a rate assessed at so much per house. In the absence of evidence to the contrary, it must be assumed that in future the payments to the town clergy were met from the feoffees’ own funds.
It would not have been surprising to find a present for the Queen recorded in the accounts. xlviii and li below. 167 In 1582 the governors of the school, on behalf of and with a large financial contribution from the feoffees, bought St Peter’s Hospital. Why they bought the property at this juncture is not clear. From the earliest account, the feoffees had been making regular payments to the poor people in St Peter’s Hospital. 169 However, a well known clause at the end of the Bury chantry certificate indicated the feeling that much had been lost by the townsmen at the dissolution ‘and soe [they] petition for some foundation of an hospitall for the poore and schoole for the education of youth’.
